TCM or Oriental Medicine, is based on an energetic model rather than the biomedical model of Western medicine. TCM may include a wide range of traditional medical practices including acupuncture, herbal medicine, tui na (Chinese medical massage), moxibustion, cupping, and nutritional therapy. This healing system originated in China and has a continuous clinical history of over 5,000 years. The basic concept involves the belief that Qi (pronounced chee), the vital energy of life, flows through the body along specific pathways called meridians. Any imbalance or blockage of Qi can lead to illness. Chinese medicine evaluates the relationship between the internal systems of the body to identify patterns of disharmony. Many conditions can be alleviated rapidly, while others may need slow and steady treatment. In some cases, acupuncture and Oriental medicine are a compliment to Western medicine and outside medical referrals will be made when appropriate.
